Hebrew Word of the Week: מזל טוב (Congratulations)

Hebrew Word of the Week: מזל טוב (Congratulations)

Mazal tov is said in response to a variety of achievements, including a birthday, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, new job, or an engagement.

It’s also said at Jewish weddings, when the groom stomps on a glass to symbolize the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. That’s why, when you’re at a restaurant in Israel and someone accidentally breaks a glass or dish, people jokingly say mazal tov as well.
