Flat urban terrains are a tourist’s best friend and luckily, Tel Aviv has been blessed with plenty of flat terrain, which is why it’s perfect for bicycle rides, but also for walks and there’s nothing like discovering a city on foot. So, if you’re going on vacation to Tel Aviv and you want to get to know it properly, follow one or more of these trails to learn about the city’s history, character, tastes and residents.
- A green walk in the big city
Not far from your hotel in Tel Aviv and within walking distance from the coolest nightlife spots, you can find plenty of nature walking along HaYarkon river, one of the largest rivers in the area. Just head for HaYarkon Park and when you reach it, walk east until you arrive at Rosh Tzippor (bird’s head) Forest where the Ayalon and Yarkon rivers meet. From there, continue on to the adjacent Hachava farm where Talmei Aviv agricultural school once stood. There, you can visit the bird watching center, butterfly house and petting zoo. The fourth and last stop on this trail is Napoleon’s Hill, also known as Tel Jarisha – a name that was derived from the Arab village that was situated nearby. The hill has historical significance since this is where the British forces gathered to cross the Yarkon river in the first world war. Today it is an archeological site.
- A graffiti tour in South Tel Aviv
You can enjoy an especially colorful walk through the impressive street art in Florentine neighborhood. Graffiti tours are a global trend that also reached Tel Aviv. The colorful streets you should not miss are Abarbanel, Frankel, HaMehuga and Nechemiah. Another place worth visiting on your way back to your hotel is Pachot MeElef (Less Than a Thousand) Gallery, where you can find dozens of art pieces, each sold for under one thousand Shekels.
- Ha’Atzmaut Trail
Ha’Atzmaut Trail is one kilometer long and is clearly marked so you can easily find your way. You can download a free app that offers historical information on all the sites along this trail, as well as games for the kids.
Expect to visit the first ever kiosk built in Tel Aviv in 1910, Nahum Gutman Mosaic Fountain, Akiva Arie Weiss house, which was one of the first houses in Ahuzat Bayit neighborhood, HaHagana Museum, Meir Dizengoff statue and more.
Tip: while visiting the Herzliya Gymnasium, enter Migdal Shalom Tower to see the magnificent pictures that captured the beginnings and development of Tel Aviv.
- A walk by the sea
This walk will lead you through the beautiful beaches of Tel Aviv, important historical sites and refreshing shopping and leisure centers. We recommend you start at the Jaffa Port, which is one of the oldest ports in the world. There, you can see the famous Andromeda’s Rock, read about the ancient legend and visit the Clock Tower. There, on the beach, continue on to Etzel Museum for a quick history lesson and then visit HaTachana shopping compound, which used to be the Old Jaffa train station, for some shopping, a delicious meal in one of the restaurants or some ice cream. After you’ve rested, continue to London Square, which was inaugurated in 1942 as a tribute to the residents of the British city, and then to the famous Metzitzim Beach, named after the iconic Israeli movie that was set there, to end your walk with a beautiful sunset.
